Roofing Calculator: Squares from Roof Area
Enter the area you measured and the roof pitch. This tool converts it into roofing squares — the unit every roofer quotes in — and shows what those squares cost in your market.

The formula
Squares = (area x pitch multiplier) / 100; Squares with waste = squares x (1 + waste %)
One roofing square is exactly 100 square feet of roof surface. If you measured the ground footprint rather than the sloped roof, the pitch multiplier converts it to actual surface area; if you already measured on the roof, choose the flat option.
Worked example
A 2,400 sq ft footprint at a 6:12 pitch works out to about 2,688 sq ft of roof surface, which is 26.9 squares — 29.6 squares once a 10% waste allowance is added, or roughly 89 bundles of shingles.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet is a roofing square?
Exactly 100 square feet of roof surface. A 30-square roof is 3,000 square feet of sloped surface, not floor area.
How do I calculate roofing squares from my house size?
Multiply the ground footprint by a pitch multiplier (about 1.06 for a low slope, 1.12 for a 6:12, 1.25 for an 8:12 and up to 1.4 for very steep), then divide by 100.
How many squares is a 2,000 sq ft roof?
A measured 2,000 sq ft roof surface is 20 squares. A 2,000 sq ft footprint usually works out to 21 to 28 squares once pitch and overhangs are counted.
How many bundles of shingles per square?
Three bundles cover one square for standard 3-tab and architectural shingles. Heavier designer and premium shingles can take four or five bundles per square.
Should I add waste to my square count?
Yes. Order 10% extra on a simple gable roof and 15% on a roof with multiple valleys, hips, dormers or skylights so cuts and starter courses do not leave you short.
