The formula
Tiles = area / tile area, plus waste; Thinset ≈ 1 bag per 60-95 sq ft depending on tile size
Larger format tiles need more thinset per square foot because of the deeper notch trowel required.
Worked example
A 100 sq ft floor with 12x24 tiles needs 50 tiles plus waste, about 55 tiles total, and two bags of thinset.
Frequently asked questions
How much extra tile should I buy?
Ten to fifteen percent for standard layouts. Buy from a single lot and keep a spare box for future repairs, since dye lots change.
